Filter And/or MultiValve problems

So the house I bought last year has a pool and is quite nice. The problem I'm having is I'm getting filter sand in the pool. Not much, and I can't tell during which cycle of backwashing/ rinsing/ filtering it happens. There isn't a TON of sand, but this is a new problem. Its not constant... just looks like a puff or two every now and then coming in from the return jets from the pump/filter. My immediate thought was there is some kind of problem with the multivalve... a crack or break inside that shouldn't be there. I did find a small piece of plastic stuck in one of the jets into the pool, which is why I think this may be the problem.

So is there anything else that might be causing this issue? The filter itself is fiberglass, and seems relatively new, but I guess there could be something broken inside if it as well.

And while I don't consider myself super "handy", I feel comfortable removing all the screws from the valve, and opening it up to see what there is to see. But before I take this apart, at the very least, can I just assume I can put it back together, even if there are problems, so I can wait for someone to replace it? The last thing I need is for the pump and filter to be out of commission. Pool services are incredibly slow where I live, and can't wait for them to come fix something.

Since your multi-port seems to be functioning OK, it would seem to me that the only way to get sand from the filter is something amiss inside the filter. A broken lateral, stand pipe not seated properly maybe, but definitely something that is inside the filter.

Sorry, I misread your post. Yes, you can definitely do a breakdown of that multiport. Just removing the screws gioves you a clear look at the insides and is simple enough to put back.

Make sure the gasket ("wagonwheel") is seated properly.

Great! I'll take the multiport apart and at least take a look to see if anything looks broken our out of whack. I'm guessing it manages connecting the different ports in different ways, so I'm hoping if something is wrong, it will be obvious... Past that, if I can find a pool company without a 100 day wait, I'll ask them to check the filter...
