Filling pool

I've had the pool for 5 years and had a company maintain it but they started doing a really bad job over the winter and it was green and awful this opening season and so I decided to take over myself.

The calcium levels were through the roof and it was so dirty that after a bit of work we decided to drain it and are in the process of cleaning the drained pool/pool deck area and are about ready to refill, and I realized I didn't know how anything worked, and I didn't know if I could fill the pool all the way and then worry about chemicals, or do I need to be adding chemicals as the water is being added?
Also, do I need to add a filter to the waterhose or can I just fill it straight from city water?

Welcome to TFP! Be sure to refill the pool right away to prevent potential shell movement. As long as you aren't on a well, just fill from the garden hose. Once full, let the water mix for a few hours then grab a water sample with your TF-100 or Taylor rK-2006C test kit. Post your test results here and we'll be happy to help.

Also see our ---------> Pool Care Basics for recommended levels, chemicals, and much more!

Fill it all the way up. Don't worry about chemicals until done but you'll want to immediately add chlorine. Many people tie a kitchen towel around the hose head.

Please update your signature with all of your pool and equipment info. See my signature as an example. Have a nice weekend.. :swim:
I will update my signature as soon as I figure out how to measure how many gallons are in my pool...
I also meant to ask... I saw some videos of people pouring liquid chlorine around the edges of the pool before refilling, is that something I should do? I couldn't figure out why they were doing that from googling as I got a lot of contradicting information. My pool is made of concrete if that matters.
