So I'm just going to ramble (sorry)... We are torn on vinyl vs fiberglass.

I live in rural Iowa so I will have to close the pool every Septemberish. We live on 1.3 acres off a long private drive. We have neighbors and we're next to a golf course. With a vinyl pool, when we drain it, where do we drain to? We don't have access to a sewer via public roads that are easily accessible... can we have a reservoir built that goes to the sewer?

PB came by today, just a sales guy. I was disappointed with his ability to field questions.

This company uses Sun Pools for fg and we really like the Tropic style. I grew up with a vinyl pool so I'm somewhat more familiar with that. He told me a vinyl liner replacement would cost 7-10k and it lasts 5-10 years. He will quote both vinyl & fg. I wanted a 20x40 vinyl with a sun shelf... I'll post more detail on the quotes when I get them but the fg pool was $90k ish. He quoted me $70-80k on vinyl but not sure if that includes sun shelf.

I'm going to call PB#2 tomorrow to see where we are with a quote.

Also we did something stupid. We had a company come and put asphalt down over our gravel. We had been on a waiting list but at that time we had never considered putting in a pool. If we move forward with the pool, so much heavy equipment will be on it. Ugh...

$7-10k is stratospheric for a liner replacement. The top guys in my area are in the $3-4k range, the budget ones are at like $2-2.5k. Also, a liner should last you AT LEAST 10 years if you take basic care of your pool. I'm ramping up for a reno on a pool that I inherited that was completely neglected for 6-7 years and the liner is still holding up at 13 years.

That said, personally i'd just look at the prices of FG vs vinyl and go with whichever one gives you what you want cheapest. Prices vary drastically by area. Where i'm at vinyl is by far the cheapest in both initial purchase and long term maintenance. I wouldn't even consider gunite up here cause it's a money pit. But down south gunite can be had so much cheaper and it lasts better so the equation changes a lot.
