Hi, everyone! I like adding a bottle of chlorine at a time, so I usually do that every other day. This means that I am usually going above the maximum recommended FC level for my Cya. I just came across something that says you can go too high for your cya too protect the chlorine. If the recommended range is 5-9 and I bring it to 13, am I wasting 4 ppm’s of the chlorine? I certainly want to keep my bleach bottle consumption as low as possible. (I hate the environmental impact of all those bleach bottles!) Thanks!

I don't know the answer to your question but have you looked into if there's a place near you that does chlorine refills? Pinch-A-Penny near me sells a large bottle that you bring back to get refilled. They also may take chlorine bottles back and reuse them (not positive about this).

If you look at the FC/CYA Levels you will see a minimum , a range for a target, but no maximum. The pool is safe to swim as long as you never ever go below minimum or above the SLAM level.

Oh… and regarding the bleach bottles…

You can try to locate bulk/refill supplier near you (not everyone is lucky enough to find one) or you could consider a SWG. With a SWG you only need to add LC when water temps are below 65F.

I realize it is safe to swim, but I was wondering if the chlorine burns off quicker if you go above the recommended range, so that daily adding will use less chlorine than every other day would. ex: recommended range is 5-9. I bring it up to 13, and two days later it's at 5. Would it lose less per day if I only brought it up to 9? I saw something that seemed to indicate that's the case. I may experiment with daily adding and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion on the bulk chlorine. I don't see a place near me that does that, but I'll keep my eyes open. That would be great!

Higher fc levels do degrade a little faster but going a ppm or two over the highest target 🎯 on the chart is not really that big of a deal. It’s not really a linear loss either so hard to calculate.
In fact this is how the once a week pool services roll - they dose heavy once a week & pray there’s still fc left when they come back. I don’t recommend that method but if anyone is worried about the cost of chlorine it’s probably them.
U could try running a little less “hot” & see where it lands u.
I have an undersized swg so about once a week I give it a shot in the arm with some liquid chlorine- this works well for me- do whatever works for u so long as u never go below minimum for your cya 😊

The best way to save on chlorine is dose daily after sunset and keep pool (mostly) covered during the day while not in use. Mostly cover because you need some sunlight to get rid of CC.
By dosing after sunset you ensure you have the highest concentration during the longest time, what will help to keep the pool sanitary even if you end up operating close to minimum.
Now, if you also want to be easy (not TFP approved, I’d argue it is compatible), run the pool slight hot, dose daily about 2/3 of a gallon (don’t bother measuring with precision) and test adjust every 3-4 days.
