We have a VERY hot summer in PA, and I"m losing about 1/4" per night in my pool--for what I assume to be evaporation. I have a solar cover--but the stairs are open/uncovered--and all the water on top of the cover is gone by the next morning, so that is why I'm assuming evaporation. Also my pool is heated, and the nights are cool(ish), like around 65-degrees. Is this relatively typical?

I went through this last year. Since we had just installed a heater, I thought we had a leak in one of the pipes. After digging them up again and watching, we confirmed there were no leaks. We had very little rain during this time so we determined it was evaporation. We also noticed it in our fountain. My husband bought an automatic hose feeder to solve that problem. Not a big deal for the pool because I am out there watering the garden often enough, I can add water to the pool manually.

Thank you!!! I am thinking evap too--since I didn't really lose any water before the pool water was heated...........seemed to be noticable once the water was over 85-degrees. The pool is BRAND NEW, and I did a pressure test on all my plumbing, so I'm 99.9% certain it is not plumbing. I was just surprised that even with a solar cover, we still are losing a little bit of water (but then again, the stairs are completely uncovered).

You could try turning the heater off and leaving the solar cover on overnight to see how much heat loss you have. With this heat wave, you may not have to run the heater often. My pool is small, so it heats up quickly and I only turn it on when I need it.

Mine is Heat Pump.......so only comes on with a call for heat...........which I haven't had since we filled the pool, lol. It has been holding 87-plus degrees since that first day.

Time to remove that solar cover. I'm also in PA and losing 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water a day as well. My water temp is over 90 degrees without a cover. I can't imagine if I had a solar cover on in this heat.

You could try the bucket test to rule out a leak.

Pool is only 2-weeks old, and I pressure-tested the Plumbing lines before (and after) I buried them. HOPEFULLY getting rain tonight in my area!
