equipment leak

I have an old pentair rainbow 320, inline clorinator which constantly leaks. I replaced the o-ring and it seems to be dripping in the pipe joint.
I havent used it in years and I just want to remove it from the system.

its connected between output pipes going buried into the ground so I cant get the pipes spread enough to just add a short piece of pipe.
Im looking at unions but they all seem to be pipe thread?

Why is something so seemingly easy, (stick a 10" piece of pipe in there) so difficult?

It should be a simple matter to dig a little to cut out the chlorinator and connect the ends back with a short length of pipe and 2 couplers.
