End of Season?

I stopped by our Ocean State (central CT) today pick up a couple cases of shock. They've swapped out their stock for winterizers, so no more cheap chlorine. I take this as a sign of end of season. We usually go through 2-3 gallons a week so I'll run completely out this weekend. I think I should close it up early before it reverts to green. Either that or start using tabs which I have a small stockpile of. Thoughts?

Can you get liquid chlorine from WalMart, Lowes or Home Depot? My Walmart still had plenty of liquid but they will start moving it out over the next 2 weeks as holiday stuff comes in. I know people tend not to stockpile but at this time of year I do because I know I'll use it by the end of season and I can't get more.

Remember regular bleach, although a lower strength of chlorine, will work as well. Just be sure it's plain/regular, and nothing splashless or scented. No Clorox brand either.

I respectfully disagree. It is a sign that most people with pools by you will close WAY too early before the water temps are below 60 degrees. This will all but guarantee spring swamps when they open late, with water temps a good deal above 60 degrees.

I have no idea why but in the Northeast, pools are a Memorial day to Labor day thing for many folks. We can be 80+ degrees long before/after the 'season', yet the holidays dictate the season, not the weather.

I always wanted to look at the pool and not the green trampoline. Asthetics alone gave me great openings each year doing so before the algae could grow.

I don't understand why people here close their pools so early. Is it just because once kids are back in school they don't use it much and don't want to continue to maintain it? I'm pricing out closing services (I'm lazy) and the one place said September is already completely booked and I'm like, nah I'm looking at the last 2 weeks of October to close, when water is below 60. I've got 2 months on this bad boy yet but I had to stock up on LC now.

I'm one of those that close a week or 2 after Labor Day. My thoughts have always been why continue to keep it open and deal with the expense of it all if no one is using it. Closing when I do also gives me a jump on everything in preparation for the upcoming winter. In almost 20 years of having this pool, there was only one time IIRC, that I opened with a green pool. But in anticipation of tomorrows TFP seminar on pool prep for the winter, I may extend the time I keep it open.
