Hello Joannie & Mike, I just finished reading all 31 pages of your DIY build and am very impressed, you have done a tremendous amount of work and it looks fantastic! I am in the beginning phases of a DIY pool build and have numerous questions but I will start slow and go from there :D

Having been an equipment operator for a couple summers while in college and never having dug a pool how do I dig a pool? Is it 12” deeper than the plans state? (9’ for an 8’ pool?) how much wider do you go 6” per side or more?

I’m in northern California and the quotes around here to dig a hole in the ground are ridiculous even if I have to spend a few dollars more on gunite for an oops its still cheaper than the alternative.

Thank You! Please continue to post pictures and keep going with the updates, we are looking forward to seeing the finished product.

The plan dimensions probably show finished edge dimensions. Look at your cross section from your engineering page and the thickness of the gunite + your finish (plaster) is how much deeper/wider you need to dig. Some areas call for more gunite depending on where they are in the pool (bondbeam vs wall vs floor).

Hope that helps!
