Drift during cloudy days

Hi Everyone,

What I have been doing over the last few weeks is to let the SWG drift up naturally during cloudy days form say 5FC to 10-12FC and then turn off the SWG off and let it drift down back to 5-7FC. Does this do any more Sanitizing and does it harm or help anymore than keeping it stable?

Regards

With a SWG it’s natural for it to drift a bit as you have some cloudy days and some sunny days, but it sounds like your SWG might be set a little too high. What you are doing isn’t hurting anything, but I’m not sure it’s really helping anything either and it seems like more work that you really need to be doing.

If you turn the SWG down a bit then it will still drift up a bit during cloudy days, but it should also naturally come down a bit during really sunny days. It may go up and down a bit as the weather changes, but as long as you make sure that it’s not going below your minimum FC level then you should be good.

Anything above target range is a waste, but with a 2 ppm variance in target range and 2-4 ppm expected daily loss, its easy to be below target range at times. Many of us keep it just above target range so when it drifts down it becomes in range again. Most units cost between 8 and 15 cents an hour to run dividing cost by lifespan hours (not counting electric costs). An hour or 2 added run time per day will not be noticeable long term when the cell reaches end of life 3 months earlier.

Anything below SLAM level based on your CYA per the FC/CYA Levels is safe for both swimmers and your equipment.
