Ive been having a issue of the very fine pollen, dirt, etc et not catching in my sand filter. I called someone out to change the sand, or see if I have some channeling going on, but once he saw my water clarity, he said I dont want to take your money. He said if i still want him to do it, he would, but my water is crystal clear, but still have fine dust that will spread across pool floor when pump is on. Ive used skimmer socks for the past two years, and yes, it catches a lot of dirt, but not sure why im still getting that silt , or dirty cloud puffing up when brushed. The pool guy said it was not algae, and he has seen this a lot, and mine actually looks pretty good compared to what he has seen. All my levels are perfect, and pass all test for algae..Ive actually vacuumed to waste once, but its still happening..If i have the pump on slower speed, its not that big of a issue, but when its on high speed, within a few hours its all over floor again..

Unless you can pick it up between your thumb and forefinger, it's not dirt.

In all probability, it's dead algae. It never gets to your filter. You have enough chlorine in your pool to kill a lot of it (that's what settles to the floor) but not enough to eradicate it.

The cycle will continue ad infinitum until you SLAM your pool and then maintain adequate chlorine.

Of course, it is possible that's not it but we see the same story post after post and year after year.
