I’m at the start of getting my IG “sport” pool built and one of the members here suggested I look into forgoing a main drain due to the size and use of the pool. A quick Google search doesn’t yield many results and seems to not be widely adopted. Is this because PB do not like change, the industry likes selling unnecessary equipment, or to get it right it involves a little more than just leaving holes out of the bottom of the floor?

Are there many here who have either built a pool without a main drain or had a remodel done that removed one?

Here is the original post over a year ago so looking for updates or new builds since then:

Jeff,

There is nothing wrong with having a main drain, but there are thousands of pools out there without an operating main drain and they all work just fine.

I would be willing to bet that most people would not even know if I snuck over in the middle of the night and turned their main drain off...

I believe that a main drain in a liner pool is more of a disadvantage then is it is an advantage.

Thanks,

Jim R.

So the PB said they could do a drainless setup, but suggested that we put suction lines in the wall. I don't recall seeing this done on other drainless builds that I found. They just strategically placed the returns and relied on the skimmers to circulate the water and collect surface debris and then vacuums to do the rest. Does anyone have in-wall suction lines?
