Just wanted to share my most recent experience since I am becoming somewhat of an expert at this. I've done AA many times as well as citric acid. I have, in the past, dumped 5 pounds of Citric Acid in my 45,000 gal pool and another time 2 containers of Natural Chemistry's plus product which is 3.5 pounds of AA. They both worked but I think I was putting too much in. This most recent time I got 5.5 pounds of AA on eBay and used 2 cups. Circulated all day yesterday and then off over night. Then used vitamin C tabs in a sock to get some areas in corners etc this morning. Maybe I will have an easier time getting the Chlorine to hold this time since there won't be so much AA or Citric in the pool. Links to the AA and Citric Acid are below.

Just remember that citric acid tends to deplete FC more strongly than ascorbic acid. In other words, it takes 3 moles of hypochlorous acid to oxidize 1 mole of citric acid whereas it only takes 1 mole of hypochlorous acid to oxidize ascorbic acid. Normally one needs to use larger amounts of citric acid to get the same effect as ascorbic acid which is why ascorbic acid is typically used. Finally, citric acid tends to form THMs (mostly chloroform) when exposed to chlorine whereas ascorbic acid is simply turned into it's less reactive form, dehydroascorbic acid. Dehydroascorbic acid eventually is broken down into carbonates and carbon dioxide.
