Do you really REALLY need to open autocover weekly/monthly during all seasons?

Hi all-
I've seen it said that an autocover needs to be opened on a regular basis (even off-season) to let offgassing escape. Is this really REALLY true? Clearly, it won't be in the best interest (or maybe even possible) to open my new autocover in freezing temps. As long as I'm sure the water level is doing well to support the cover, do I really need to try to open it during warmer windows after closed for the season? My pool is 48 degrees right now and FC is currently 2 with very low CYA, so nothing dramatic there.
FYI- I took a baseline measurement 3" out from the edge at the center of the pool with the cover on while water was perfectly filled so I don't need to open to check - I can, in theory, just measure this same way again.

Thanks!
Susie

During your winter, no, there is no reason to open the cover. When water reaches 60F, then you need to open it in the sunlight every few days.

I want to modify my answer a bit. If you are adding chlorine, then it would be wise to open the cover in the sunlight occasionally. If your pool is not consuming chlorine, there is no need to open the cover.

At lower temps and the pool closed down no gases are being produced which benefit from being allowed to air out.

During the seasons that the pool is being actively monitored, chlorinated and functioning I do think its important to open the pool every few days or so to let any trapped gasses out and let the sun shine in.
