Do I need to add skimmer float valves?

My pool has a main drain and 2 skimmers. Each skimmer seems to have 2 holes in it. There is no skimmer float valve in the skimmers. I have 3 separate suction lines coming in to the pump (labeled Skimmer 1, Skimmer 2, Main Drain) with a separate valve on each line at the pump.

Questions:
1. Do I have 3 independent suction lines (i.e. the main drain not in series with either skimmer)?
2. Do I need to have float valves in the skimmers?
3. Is there advantage (or risk) to having float valves in the skimmers just as a precaution if water level drops low? Low water has caused problems in the past.

I can post pictures if useful.

Thanks!!

Des,

You have three separate lines.. One from each skimmer and one from the main drain.

Your main drain is not connected to your skimmer.

As a test, go lift up the skimmer baskets and I think you will find that only one of the two holes has any suction, and the other hole is capped off.

Edit.. or the 2nd hole is plumbed into an equalizer port right below the skimmer that looks like a pool return.

Thanks, @Jimrahbe , just verified as you suggested 🙏 Also no equalizer port here.

Is it then a bad idea to use a float valve for the water-low scenario, or is it Ok? I'd rather have the pool run drawing less water from just the main drain, than have it lose prime & run dry.

Des,

I think the majority of members here would vote to have the floating diverters. I on the other hand am often not part of that group...

I have a couple of rent house pools that have the main drain plumbed into the skimmer, and the floating diverters never worked well for me when I tried them.

I have not used them in the past 8 years or so and have never had a problem with the water going too low at the skimmer.

I never wait until the last second to add water. And after a while, you kind of get a feel for how the pools work.

Thanks,

Jim R.
