North Texas
New pebble sheen pool filled with water a week ago in North Texas. Went to large pool supply store and had water tested. Asked the guy several questions and even took my pool start up info. He seemed very knowledgable and explained what we needed to do and I went home feeling confident with using the chemicals I had just purchased. I've now read that the pool shock that we put in the pool shouldn't have been used until after 30 days. I did not know that pool shock and regular chlorine are two different things. They kept saying that I need to add the shock to bring the chlorine levels up. I even made sure it was liquid rather than powder because to me a liquid seems that it would dissipate quicker thus being safer for the pool finish. Then I checked before pouring in the contents that it was the correct product on the pool supply print out. Here I thought I was doing a great job with brushing and learning about the chemicals and now I am sick to my stomach thinking I may have messed up the pool finish.

Can someone please ease my mind?

Welcome to TFP! If you are referring to pool store "liquid shock", that's just their name. It's liquid pool chlorine, same as pool chlorine at Walmart or Home Deport, perhaps slightly stronger. It's fine as long as you didn't add it until "3" days after initial fill. After 3 days, you are expected to start balancing your chemistry.

1. You MUST get a proper test kit Stay out of the pool store. They will misguide you and happily take lots of $$$. You need a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C. Get one of those as soon as you can and post a full set of numbers for us.
2. Do you know what chemical s have been added to-date?
3. Update your signature. See mine as an example.

Get familiar with the link below. Lots of great info. With a little time reading you'll be an expert of your own pool and we'll help you. But it starts with that testing. For now, try to give us some more info about your pool and any past chemicals and we'll guide you.
