deep cleaning sand filter question

I just deep cleaned my sand filter. I tried to be careful as I moved the hose around the bottom of filter. Today I noticed sand in the road where my pool drains during a backwash or waste cycle. My question is this a common occurrence after the deep cleaning or have I possibly damaged a lateral line.

Not sure what this means.

It may just be that that sand is lighter (weight) and is carried away during the backwash cycle. Waste would be from the pool. It would not mean damaged laterals.

Hope that helps!

Did you wait till the pressure gauge went to 0 before moving the handle or better yet was the pump on while switch positions on the mpv.
Yes, I always wait until the pressure drops and no, I never change the mpv while motor is running.
When I was deep cleaning the sand filter the mpv was in between settings where the pool closers had left it. I changed it to close. I then continued running water into filter. Could these steps somehow have gotten sand into the drain pipe?
