DE Powder in Pool

Hello,

Here is my situation:
  • My pool is 1 year old new inground. Hayward pump/filter system, with chlorine generator Hayward T-cell
  • Several days ago I took off the cell to clean it for the first time.
  • Just before I did this, maybe 1 hour earlier, I had backwashed and added new filter powder
  • In retrospect I realize this was dumb to take off the cell so soon. Doing this obviously breaks the closed system and the air in the pipes pushed out the water back through my skimmer, and I believe there was left over DE powder still in the line. So my pool became cloudy with some powder residue
  • After getting cell back together, I vacuumed completely and ran filter for 1-2 days. The water is now crystal clear.
  • However, I've noticed that DE powder keeps showing up at the bottom - small llines of it. I vacuum it daily but it comes back. When the filter/pump is OFF at night, I notice in the morning there is little to no powder in the pool. However as soon as filter is running again for few hours, it starts to show. So my concern now is that it is coming out the line from the filter.
  • After a number of days of this, I decided to completely backwash again, and add new powder. Filter continues to run fine pressure is good. But I notice again the same issue happening , after its been running for a while so powder residue shows up at bottom of pool.
Let me know if any thoughts? Is it just there is remaining residue in the pool water and it will take some time to clean out? Or could there be a bigger problem with filter tear or maybe the O-ring on the pool filter handle? The whole system is still new, only 1 year old so I assume it's unlikely there is issues with the parts like this, but let me know ideas.

As you well know DE is so incredibly fine it's just really going to be a matter of time to get it all. Do you have a robot or vac with a fine micron bag? Flannel lined bags work well to get that super fine residue. We supplement our sand filter with DE when we have debris or metals and once my son spilled some in the pool. It takes time.

I have a robot vac. Thanks for your reply. I can just keep cleaning it for several days and see if it gets less and less.

Hi and welcome. I don't know what equipment exactly you have since your signature isn't filled out like mine below. Backwashing the filter should not cause what you have because the DE that goes to waste isn't in the same line that gets used for filtering. Your valve isn't fully in the right position or some gasket is messed up. On another note the cell should be left alone until the controller tells you there's a problem. Every time you clean it if it's being dine with a mixture of MA will shorten the life of the plates that do the work. Having the correct pool chemistry is the gig here for fewer cleanings....
How are you testing your water ?
