DE out of return

I recently started a SLAM and I noticed that after backwashing there is a small amount of DE coming out of the returns closest to the pump. I have a DE4800, for which I understand the fresh charge should be 5 pounds of DE, and after a backwash I add about a pound of DE. The grids were replaced right before I started SLAMing (about a week ago). I just read the filter cleaning stickie, and realize that I should be alternating backwashing with rinsing, which I have not done. Could I be adding too much DE?

After backwashing, you should be adding about 80% of the full amount. So you have been adding too little, but you have also not been doing a very thorough backwash, so likely ok.

Did the problem start after you replaced the grids? I would suspect something not quite right inside the filter.

The pool was closed for two years, and when I opened the filter the grids were ripped. I did not replace the "finger" at the top though....

As long as the finger had no tears out should be fine.

I would suggest pulling it all apart and inspecting everything.
