DE Filters - Are They All Equal?

My Jandy 60 sqft DE filter needs to be replaced. I'm getting small leaks around seem. I've replaced the o-ring and metal collar but it still leaks. I'm assuming the plastic case has lost its shape after 12 years of the sun beating down on it.

My question is, are all DE Filters equal when it comes to form and function or is there a recommended brand/model I should buy?

It would seem to me they are all the same. No moving parts. Just a container to hold the filter media and DE. I just replaced the collar and filter cartridges on my Jandy so if I got the same model I could reuse. But I am not opposed to buying something different if there is a stand out model.

Really appreciate any advice you have.

ac,

From my point of view, they are all the same.. The main difference now is between the Grid style or the Cartridge style. Anything bigger than your 60 sq.ft. seems to be cartridge. I believe that all the brands are equal with one another.

The bigger the better in my mind. The bigger they are the longer you can go between cleanings. Ever since I installed VS pumps, I have quit backwashing.. I just tear them apart and clean them twice a year. Running at a low RPM my filter pressure never gets above about 10 PSI.

Thanks Jim. It's kind of what I figured but wanted to make sure. There are no moving parts. Just a pressured sealed container to hold the media so couldn't imagine one has better operation than another.

Mine has the grids and as I mentioned, I just replaced them about 9 months ago. Would make sense to get the same filter again so I could use them and have the new ones as a spare.

However, you mention bigger is better which makes sense. I think they make a 72 in some models. I just fired my pool guy and am gonna fo back to maintaining the pool myself. The less I have to break that thing down the better. Will a 72 be appreciably less maintenance than my 60? Worth the added cost and not being able to reuse my new parts?

ac,

I agree with zea3... I would buy another filter that would accept the same size grids that you have now. Going from 60 to 72 won't make enough difference to really matter.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Filter size recommendations are based on season length and pool size. I do not know where Porter Ranch is and your signature is blank.

Please add your location (City, State or City, Country) to your profile and pool details to your signature as described HERE as it will help us help you.
