Can someone give me some insight on the use of liquid chlorine? Particularly Pool Essentials from Walmart, what are the parameters I should b concerned with regarding the date stamp? How old is too old, etc?

I added my first LC yesterday and hoping to make the switch permanent from pucks.

Thanks!

As a bleach (chlorine) user myself, you can feel safe using either Wal-Mart's Pool Essentials that they stock in spring/summer, or you can use their Great Value bleach in the laundry section (plain/regular only). Both are Sodium Hypochlorite which is the active ingredient used for sanitation. Those should be 8.25% in strength.

Other than that, you might take a look at the Julian Date on the bottle to see how old it is. For example, today is "7-017" day .... year 2017 ... the 17th day. May 1st would be 7-121 day. So you want a Julian Date somewhat close to your current day do the bleach isn't too old. Hope that helps.

I use the W*M Pool Essentials also. In Houston, I find some W*Ms shelf the stuff outside in the heat, near the garden section. Stay away from those if you can, as Gary implied. I only buy from W*Ms that shelf it inside. Other than that, the bottles are never VERY old, though some are older than others. I always check the dates and get the freshest ones.
