I wouldn't touch DE with 20' pole. I have sand and it works great. If it dies (likely not, System 3 built like a tank), I'd go BIG Cartridge. In your pool a CCP420 of 520 and you'd clean once a year.

I live on an acre with a lot of trees and a mesh safety cover. Pool is only open from May-September for me in NJ. Do you know if cartridge filters have any issues trapping algae? To my understanding that was the selling point of DE filters.

I live in the Northeast Corner of PA, and I have no issues with a sand filter. They are Cheap, Easy, and it's been my experience for 10 plus years now that sand filters keep pools exceptionally clean. Just my two cents.

Edit to add: Make it so you don't get algae, and you don't have to filter out algae.

I'd also add that My property is loaded with maple trees, and I have a row of huge Cedar trees right next to my pool. I didn't lay out this arrangement. It was like that when I bought the property, lol.

Thanks for letting me know. I just replaced my top manifold to the original/older version I had in to see if that was the issue and perhaps I just received a defective unit when I bought it. Fingers crossed I won’t need a new filter but sand is definitely one I’d consider.

How old is your Multi Port Valve? Last year, I had DE in the return. Replacing this spring solved my problem. (I forgot who had a similar problem, but there is a thread somewhere in the forum ...)

Hey thanks for letting me know about this. To be honest I'm not sure of the age but probably original (2008) the stickers are very faded and is very janky and occasionally can see water between the crevasses of the different positions. Not sure if that is normal or not. I've near replaced everything in this pool filter besides the housing at this point lol

Hey everyone, just an update on my pool. Grayish DE looking stuff is now gone. I switched my top manifold back to the original version however could not find any cracks or damage in the new one I had previously put on. The only difference I noticed was the air relief tube on the new manifold, while the clamp was holding the sock on it very well, did have some play so perhaps that is what was causing the issue.

Hello everyone,

Just an update here. I ran AA treatment to get some rust stains out of my liner and in the process couldn't shock and so DE needed to be replaced in the filter due to pressure building up. I notice the gray powder is back and my return jets turn cloudy immediately after adding new DE to the filter. My only guess is the MPV is causing the issue. Assuming it is, I will replace the gasket. Can someone please let me know which setting of the MPV I should be on when I take it apart? Assuming it shouldn't be on filter. Thanks.
