Cya taking forever to disolve

Hi. I set up my 14 foot by 42 inch deep pool 8 days ago...so far so good... Except I added some cya according to PKG directions and it said that should take me to a 3....ok it's been 8 days and most still in sock.water is 68 degrees...my question is..can I take that sock inside the house and dissolve it in warm water and then add it to the pool ? If so how should I disperse the bucket of warm water with cya in it....

Just squeeze the sock. Is it in a skimmer or hanging in front of a return? Its still a little cold to get in there with it, but if you can reach over the side and hold the sock in the water and squeeze it will disperse the CYA.

I guess you could try soaking the sock in a bucket of hot water, then squeezing all of it out through the sock and see if that works. If it does, slowly walk around the pool with the pump running and pour the bucket into the pool. If you see a granules in the bottom of the bucket do not dump those into the pool. What to do with the granules will depend on how many there are.

Let the water circulate 15 minutes then pull a water sample to test. Let it come to room temperature and run the CYA test.

Queen, I remember having my tube sock with about 3 pounds of Clorox CYA powder in it. I held it in front of my return running full blast and squeezed the ever-living junk out of that sock for nearly an hour before it all dissolved. It took a lot longer than I thought it would take but finally... my sock was completely empty. LOL

I've been using a delicates wash bag from Walmart with great success:

Evercare Delicates Wash Bag - Walmart.com

There are many types. You need the finest one you can find.

It's much more porous than a sock, but still fine enough to not allow any CYA crystals out until dissolved. Plus it's somewhat transparent, so I can keep an eye on how much CYA is left. I hang it in my skimmer, with the top of the bag trapped between the skimmer lid and skimmer opening, so it's kind of suspended in the skimmer basket. I believe this keeps the bag from clogging up the basket more than necessary, increases flow through and around the bag, and keeps the bag from floating out into the pool should the pump turn off (power failure or whatever).

I added 10ppm of CYA the other day in less than an hour without squeezing. I like to add CYA into the skimmer, because I stained my pebble with CYA and I'll never introduce it directly over the pebble again, in any form (liquid or dry) in any way (sock, return, walking around squeezing, etc). I want it to dissolve into the skimmer and get trapped in the filter if need be, so by the time it reaches the pool it is well dissolved.

When I first tried a sock, I experienced what you did. Taking forever, endless squeezing, trying to balance it from a pole so the return would hit it just right, etc. Just didn't like the way that all worked...

Ok...well that was not as I thought it would be... It still took along time of squeezing in warm water...however..I did at least get 95% of it into the pool by the time I was done...I didn't put the little bits undisolved in the pool...I just left them in the bucket...so now I'll circulate and retest water for cya...this is what I learned....I will be buying liquid form from now on...lol

For me using an older thinner sock worked better. It would bloat up then I'd come by and squeeze it and massage and come back 15-30 mins later and repeat.
I think I recall reading here some people using stockings instead to dissolve faster.

How did the liquid CYA damaged your pool? I use liquid CYA.

It was user error, but I now feel liquid CYA is not worth the risk, expense and trouble.

I was following the NPC startup card, on day four of my brand new pebble and day two of ever having taken care of a pool myself. All kinda got dumped into my lap by plaster people and worthless startup crew (local pool service company).

I had mixed the CYA in water in a big bucket, and was pouring it in around the edge, as per somebody's instructions, I don't now remember whose. That went OK, but I noticed some weight in the CYA bottle, so I put in some water to swish it around, thinking it was just a bit of CYA, and poured it into my pool in one spot. A big blob of CYA muck plopped out and quickly sank. Before I could get back with a brush, the damage was done. Only a few moments on my new pebble and I now have a light spot.

I'm still sick about it, but I was a rookie and I was doing the best I could at the time. Liquid CYA has the potential to damage plaster and pebble, and I believe coping and decking, too. If handled properly, it's fine, just as MA is. But for people new to handling pool chemicals, and for me, dry CYA is much safer, and cheaper, too.

It's especially appropriate now that I have CYA in the pool, because I'd only be adjusting in small amounts, and storing dry CYA is much less problematic than liquid (which separates).

My liquid CYA story: bought it, used it. Seemed easy, felt it was worth the extra I spent.

Then I needed to add more. But when I opened the bottle, I had some milky liquid on top, and a big block of solid CYA at the bottom. I used it, but there was no way to know what concentration the liquid was, and then once I used that, I added water to bottle and tried to dissolve the block. Took FOREVER. Like a week. Finally got it all dissolved and in the pool... and I was still low. Grrrrr.

So, now I use dry. I do it in increments so I can be careful about going over. I stick it in a sock and if water is too cold to get in, I squeeze the heck out of it from over the edge of pool. If water is warm, I get in and swim around with it, squeezing and making sure water gets good and mixed.

One more thing - if your pool water is under 70 degrees when you are ready to do CYA test, you might get different results if you let it warm up first.

This worked like a champ! I added 4 pounds of the Clorox CYA using this method yesterday. I squeezed it just a few times over the course of about 3-4 hours and it was gone. The holes in the bag are big enough to keep the crystals in, but not so small that the dissolved CYA will clog them up. Highly recommend this method to anyone having issues!

Glad it worked for you. A big component of my idea is to use this in the skimmer. That way, no matter what size the mesh, whatever gets through goes on to the filter, and not directly into the pool. It's like double-dissolving it. Whatever size particles make it out of the laundry bag, get trapped in the filter and continue to dissolve into even smaller particles there. This means you can't backwash for a while if you have a sand filter. And it might add a day or two onto the wait time for an accurate test. But, for me, I like the idea of there being virtually no possibility that nothing but the finest particle of CYA gets into the main body of water.
