CYA Levels and Cal Hypo

Hello,

My CYA levels have crept up over 100. I think it is because I have been using sodium dichloro-s triazinetrione granular shock. I only have a skimmer, no main drain. I've replaced about 30% of the water, which is all I can do at a time through the skimmer. It came down a bit and has now crept back up. Because of the store closing, I have not been able to get liquid chlorine or bleach around me. I can order Hth cal hypo from Amazon. Will that help with the CYA continuing to rise? I don't want to replace any more water until I know it's not wasted. Any other suggestions to lower CYA?

Thanks,

Adrian

Hello,
Can you provide us with a bit more info? Let’s see a current Set of results from your personal FAS/DPD Kit so we can see the entire picture. CalHypo won’t increase your CYA, but it will increase your calcium. You maybe picking one poison over another.

Also, here is some info that may help you out.

Sure, I use the Taylor K-2006
Chlorine was 1.4 (but I shocked mid week so it's not very effective)
PH is 7.5
Alkalinity is 80
Calcium not sure, out of chemicals
CYA was above 100 (that's as far as the reading goes)

Water is clear, no algae.

CalHypo won’t increase your CYA, and I’d suspect you can get by using it short term. My worry however really would be increasing your calcium level to the point you start to get scale. I’d HIGHLY suggest refilling the calcium reagent and monitor calcium increases if you select CalHypo in the future.

I used an AquaCheck 7 stick that I had and it showed that he calcium was right at 250, but I don't trust it very much because it shows the CYA levels as normal, and I know they are not. I'll order the cal hypo from Amazon in the time being and re-order the calcium reagent from taylor.

Thanks for your help.

How often do you have to lower water due to the frequent FL rains??

Have you considered using a sump pump to lower the level? Or even just a siphon hose?

You're "shocking" the pool? What does that mean- what are you adding?? Your CYA may be far higher than just 100. I can tell you now your FC is far too low and you're inviting algae to the party.
