Howdy all, I finally came around to replastering my pool in ground 10k gallon with quartzite.

I’ve been following TFP tips on startup brushing twice daily and chasing that TA/Ph numbers. I’m also slowly raising my calcium hardness using the sock method. I’m having a little trouble with the CYA as I’ve read some conflicting info here.

What’s the best way to raise my CYA? It’s been about a week and it’s still 0. I have a tab chlorinator that I use when I’m on vacation but I typically of course use liquid chlorine. I turned on my chlorinator to get a little cya out of the tabs but I think that’s likely to take weeks if not longer. I read here that you can use dichloro-s to get cya but isn’t that pool shock which I also read here not to use for 30 days? Thanks for any tips.

You add CYA using the sock method. Haven’t heard of anyone adding calcium that way though. Is it dissolving ok?

Oh did I get that wrong then? I thought the calcium powder sits on the pool if you don’t use the sock. Yea it’s dissolving great but it would be much more efficient if I could just add the 5 pounds straight into the water.

We are talking two different chemicals. Calcium and CYA.

Calcium, typically Calcium Chloride is used to raise the level of calcium in the water...we call that CH.

CYA (cyanuric acid) or "chlorine stabilizer" is used to buffer FC from UV. Without CYA in the water, FC would be consumed quickly.

You add calcium chloride by broadcasting it over the surface of the pool and brushing until it is dissolved.

CYA (granular chlorine stabilizer), should be put in a sock and tied in front of a return (like a carrot on a stick) while it dissolves. It is an acid and should not be put in a skimmer, or broadcast. It can damage pool surfaces.

Don’t let the calcium sit on the floor of the pool, brush it around so it doesn’t stick. The stabilizer goes in the sock.

Thank you yes I’ll start adding the calcium straight and brushing. The “granular chlorine stabilizer” part is what I was missing. When I read dichlor I was thinking pool shock which has it. Now that you mentioned the name, I found it online and can get that going.

Dichlor has CYA in it as a binder for the chlorine. If you use it, it will raise CYA, but it can take a while, because you don't want to over chlorinate.

Most Experts/Mods/guides here like to add what the pool needs and tend to recommend that you manage each chemical separately. That means chlorinating to chlorinate and adding CYA to raise CYA.

Thank you! I learned something new with the CYA addition. When I bought this house the CYA was slightly high and I got it under control. When it was slightly low I shocked or used tabs for the purpose of raising it which actually worked. All that to say I wasn’t aware you could buy straight CYA to add haha.

Nothing wrong with having CYA of 30 or 40 in an indoor pool discrimination again just unnecessary.
