Well we have been getting over an inch of rain a day lately and the CH has been steadily decreasing to the point it’s time to add some. I did a search of threads but the sources and brands are all several years old. What is the brand of ice melt seems to have the purest concentration?

I prefer puritech calcium chloride from Amazon for about $2 a lb. It's a happy medium between the dirt cheap ice melt and the spendy pool store stuff.

I've seen too many variations in ice melt for my likings. Manufacturers change stuff all the time and you won't know that brand did too until it's too late. It's particularly a concern in ice melt because they aren't even thinking about what said changes may do to pools.

Hang tight for more thoughts. :)

Ice Melt = dirt

Ice melt products are intended to be thrown on sidewalks during winter to help mitigate slippery icey sidewalks. If there’s dirt in the mix, that’s a bonus as it adds traction. In a pool, dirt is a bad thing as it can lead to staining.

Pay the extra cheddar for the real deal and skip the cheap stuff. Honestly, low calcium is way better than high calcium.

The minimum CH needed to keep water from getting foamy is around 50ppm. 100ppm would be fine but you need to keep the CSI between -0.3 and 0. So you might adjust your pH and TA upwards of the CH is very low.

Anything below 200ppm and you’ll find the pH and TA need to be much higher than recommended.
