Greetings All!

I ran out of Taylor R-0871, ordered more and began using leftover Taylor R-0871 from the 2023 Season. I buy new each year and keep everything in the air-conditioned house. Out of curiosity this morning as I began using the new, I retested FC with the old with a difference of 4.5 . . . and the NEW Taylor R-0871 was producing the higher numbers. The tests were repeated a second time. I would believe the old would be less reactive and require more drops producing higher result numbers. This is very counterintuitive to me. I've become very good with drop procedures. My technique is consistent.

While I understand high school chemistry well, I don't know what these chemicals are and how they function. Still, this seems counterintuitive to me.

On another note, I recently found out my husband was dumping used testing chemicals after FC testing back into the pool for cleanup last year. I frowned at that. Sometimes his efficiency gets past common sense. That couldn't possibly be good.

How could these results be so very counterintuitive to me?

Thanks!

I'm going to do just that. Thank you! Will let you know what happens.
the results

before swapping the tips
2023 R-0871
FC 9.5 CC 0
2024 R-0871
FC 11.5

after swapping tips
2023 R-0871
FC 11.5
2024 R-0871
8.0 and 8.5

So the issue does seem to be with the tips. One did seem to be leakier than the other.

Now, which tip do I continue to use?

The one that is less leaky/lower result. Let the drops fall under their own weight...don't squeeze them out fast.

Report the issue to who you bought the new reagents and ask for replacement.
