Any builders care to comment on this type of construction for pool coping? The builder is using stainless mesh on top of treated 2x4s as the base for the travertine pavers. Concrete is going underneath and around the 2x4s but I’m not sure how this is going to hold up over the long haul. Why would you use 2x4s encased in concrete instead of just pouring a concrete base and laying the pavers on top of concrete? Curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Welcome to TFP.

I think your builder is being cheap and doing what is within his abilities instead of preping a full concrete collar with some rebar in it.

Looks like it is already done.

What will be going on the outside of the coping?

The original plan was to pour washed aggregate concrete around the coping but may switch to travertine pavers. Should I have this coping removed and have it done with a concrete collar and rebar- the proper way or will this hold up? I'm worried about moisture and how the wood will hold up over time. I appreciate your thoughts- I felt the same way when I saw it but wasn’t sure if this is some new/ acceptable way of doing coping.

I have no idea how what you have will hold up.

Builders invent all sort of things that save them time or money.

Stone and concrete will always last longer then wood.
