Coping Repair or Replacement - Cost Guesses?

I've inherited a 40 year old gunite pool with the home I purchased last Summer and this will be our first full season with it. Given the current circumstances surrounding the pandemic, I'm assuming it will get some good use this year as prior scheduled vacations are shelved. That being said, with the pool being so old the coping is in disrepair and was not maintained (barely patched) by the old owner. I have attached pictures here for reference.

I'm looking for suggestions and a few answers to those who have been down the process before.
- I'm sure this question may sound silly to some, but what would be the most cost-effective way to bring this back into acceptable condition? Are there certain materials that are cheaper than others?
-Who should be doing this work? A pool company? Mason? Someone else?
- I know it is going to be all over the place depending on region, amount of contractors, etc, but what does a typical coping repair/replacement cost on an 18x36 pool?
- Any other helpful things I should know?

Again, my chief concern is for the safety of my nieces and nephews swimming in there. Last thing I want is them to slip and fall or cut themselves on the deteriorating edges.

Thanks!

Well, if it were mine, I would have the old coping removed completely and replaced. I'm guessing anywhere from $2000 - $5000. A concrete company may be able to supply the forms to attach to the top of the pool wall for the coping overhang but you might have more luck with a pool remodelling company.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

Our pool has a different type of coping as you can see under the dog. The top is brick and below inside the wall tile. I’m not an expert but if my pool looked like that I’d get a few estimates and different ideas on what could be done. You might not be able to get anything done this season depending on where you are. You may just want to get a pool guy in there and ask for the estimate and inquire if you can get the pool going and used until the time when they can come in and do the work. 5 years ago we had that brick and tile replaced. It included the materials, ( not the refill ) and opening for the season. Thankfully with an outside water meter water for outside use is metered at a different charge than inside. That whole project set us back 10,000 buckaroos, but where we live we almost have to pay for oxygen consumption too! Also cement coping may be less than this type of coping. I just noticed you’re in Massachusetts so you have a shorter season, like we do here in MD.

I can only give a guess on the prices from northern Va, but I’d assume they are relatively close. I would think $7-10k would get the coping replaced and the bond beam repaired. The coping that is there is just concrete that was formed instead of precast pieces cemented in place. How handy are you?

I would think a regular mason guy could probably do this work, and I think your cheapest option would be to mimic what was done previously and just do concrete forms.
