I'm reading here that it's better to add chlorine at night and when the pump is running. I'd also like to run the pump before daily skimmer basket cleanup and when the pool is in use.

So I was thinking running the pump for 6 hours from around 12 to 6 pm. This would allow me to be home to add chlorine around 5:30 pm and at that time, the suns direct light should be blocked by the house's shadow. Is that sufficient, or should we wait for sundown?

This also means the pump will be running during most active time of use. Which means the little water feature we have will be running and any organics will be getting mixed.

The goal is to keep your FC in a range based on your FC/CYA Levels. Adding LC at night or during the day really should not make a difference. You should always run your circulation for at least 30 minutes after adding chemicals to mix it well. The other reason to run your pump is for skimming action.
I always run my pump when people in the pool - just ensures good mixture of chlorinated water. I also add LC after a lot of pool use (when all of gone inside or finished with the pool use) just to fend off all that new bacteria from people (sweat, dead skin cells, etc. ).
