A few months ago I quit Leslies and got a tf test kit. I've had my pool pretty much dialed in for a couple months now. During this summer with a CYA of 40 I used 1/2 gallon or 10% bleach each evening. Now that the weather is getting cooler (98 next week instead of 112) is there a starting guideline to reduce the liquid bleach?

Also I have struggled all summer with high ph. I've dumped probably 5 gallons of muriatic acid in the pool in two months and it's still 8.5. Any suggestions or just leave it high for the winter and try again next year. No pool closing here in AZ. Also reducing time to filter for cooler winter months? I filter 12 hours per day now. 6 on higher speed and 6 on lower speed.

As they days get shorter and the sun lowers in the sky, you'll see less and less UV loss. Adjust your daily dose on the fly keeping on mission that you never want to sniff minimum FC. If a 5ppm dose lasts 4 days instead of 1, GREAT.

You can either continue daily doses with less added each time, or continue your recent dosing and skip days as it lasts longer. Most get lazy towards the end of the season and go with the latter.

Is the pool new ? Fresh plaster will have a healthy muriatic acid appetite for the first year or so.

What is your TA ?

How far do you lower the Ph when you do ?

Any water features such as spillover? How often do they run if so ?

$10 for 1/2 gallon of bleach? I'm using liquid chlorine from Wally World and it's about $5.40 per gallon bottle when bought in pairs and I add 1/2 gallon a day so far. Where are you getting your muriatic acid from? There are varying strengths and I use Leslies which is 31.45%. I have older plaster and the acid wash was 3 years ago so I'm maintaining PH in the 7s with 1 pint every other day or so. When I aerate, which is off now, I add more than 1 pint every couple of days because of the aeration. Keep an eye on your CH too because our tap water has high CH. You are a prime candidate for a salt water chlorine generator (I'm using LC right now until I can safely drain my water due to a CH of 900 then I'll install my new CircuPool SWG,)

Doh that was a typo. Should have said 10% not 10$. I get the exact same bleach. I found if you order more than $50 at a time it shows up on your front porch for free.

We do store pickup. This summer I have been picking up 8 gallons at a time. By the time this last 8 gallons is gone I can drain the pool and get the water back where it should be. I'm going to add a soft water line to my water leveler supply (5 feet away from the kitchen) so that after I fill and get a CH of 150 I can keep it lower with soft water.

Pool is not new. TA is 100.
Ok you'll want a lower TA. Dose Ph to a low 7 and adjust it back when it rises to a high 7.
Once the TA is 60, switch to running a high 7 Ph. Dose at 8+ and only to 7.6 or 7.8.

I've never been able to get PH under 7.5 and it seems to shoot back up quickly.
When you lower Ph, do so 0.4 at a time and mix for 15 mins. Test again to prove you hit the target and repeat more doses as necessary. Many newbs just dose and assume they got there when they didn't.

Once it's stable and you know how your pool responds, you can skip the confirmation tests.
