We have a couple of appartements that we rent out during July and August, Saturday to Saturday. The pool is a major draw so our guests would be VERY unhappy if the pool was out of action for 2-3 days during their stay. I have a slightly undersized SWCG and Ozone generator which keeps the pool clean, zero CC and FC at about 1.5ppm. My strategy is to put enough dichlore - or bleach if the CYA is > 60ppm - into the pool to bring the FC level up to about 12 on the Friday night. I put this into the southern end of the pool where the algae grows. I pump with the cover on for an hour on Saturday Morning then I open the pool and with luck the FC is below 5ppm when the guests arrive at 5pm Saturday. If the weather forecast is overcast I use slightly less Chlorine on the Friday. If there is heavy bather load and FC drops below 1.0 I add Trichlore or bleach on a daily basis. If I do get a chance during the season, I hyperchlorate the pool at 30ppm if it needs it or not. This has worked for me for the past 3 years.
HOWEVER
I have a friend with a similar challenge except his summer rental property is a couple of hours drive away, no SWCG or O3 - can anyone recommend a pool régime that could be executed in say 2-4 hours on a weekly basis? My advice to him is probably buy a place nearer to home. But I was wondering, if he kept CYA low (so FC burnt off quickly) could he do a weekly hyper chlorination (say 30ppm) 1st thing Saturday, then let the FC burn off for the rest of the day, then use a peristaltic bleach pump Monday-Friday to keep FC levels right for the rest of the week?
I'm a great believer in the troublefreepool SLAM methodology and recommended this to him for his home pool, but when you have paying guests this doesn't work so well.
We're in Provence by the way so out pools run at 26-30deg C (78-86deg F) for the peak summer months. Lots of calcium carbonate but that's a manageable problem.
Thanks Robert
