Closing sand filter inside garage without draining it

We bought this house with the pool closed for the season already. When we opened it for the summer, none of the drain plugs had been removed from the filter and the skimmer basket still had water in it.
Now I am reading up on closing our inground pool for the winter and I've watched a few videos where a wet vac was used to suck water from the intake, the outlet and skimmer. If I do this what is the best setting to have the sand filter set on without opening any of the drain plugs because the filter is in the garage and it would definitely flood.

Welcome to TFP! Before I forget, please update your signature with all of your pool and equipment info. It could help. For your main question, you probably want the multiport valve set to RECIRCULATE which essentially separates the filter from the pool. But other factors may come into play depending on your pool features, shut-off valves, etc. You might want to post a pic or two of your equipment area so we can see everything. Also take a look at the link below. Remember, for some pools a Shop-Vac is okay, but for others it's not enough power to clear the lines. A compressor designed for blowing-out pool lines (i.e. Cyclone) may be better. But show us what you have there and review the link and let us know if that helps.
