Happy Autumn to all!!

We didnt open our pool this year and want to take necessary steps to keep the pipes from cracking. We have a lot of water in the skimmer. Is that normal? How can we empty that? We didnt open the pool at all this summer. So the motor is disconnected. We tried using the our shop vac vacuum to suck out water but it seems be never ending. Could it be that we might be sucking water out of the pool. Really need help with this. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

If you need to drain water from your pool you're going to have to roll back the cover a bit and drop a submersible pump in the deep end. You'll never be able to remove enough water just using a shop vac and skimmer. If the pool was closed properly last season with plugs in the returns then there might not be water in the lines BUT I would verify that after the water level is drained down below the returns and you open them up. If water comes pouring out, then you're going to need to rent a compressor to blow the lines clear again.

If the pool was closed properly and the water has not turned green, then you can leave as is. It all depends on the type of cover you have. If your cover allows water to seep in the pool (mesh cover), then draining below the skimmer is recommended. You may wish to add Poly-Quat 60 for the winter. You have to figure out a way to mix in the pool. A little bit of chlorine is also recommended.

If somehow the lines have water in them, and the "air lock" was released for the main drain, then you may need to perform some extra steps. You may have to winterize the sand filter as well.
