Hi all, I'll be closing my pool this weekend, and I've shocked it and plan to add the Polyquat 60. It's almost down to 60 degrees. I typically add a metal sequestrant in the winter, MAGENTA STUFF | Jacks Magic and non-chlorine oxidizer Poolife Non Chlorine Oxidizer.

I know the idea of close late, open early (60 degrees), and slam + polyquat should be enough, but I did have metal staining previously, and we acid-washed the pool to remove that this year. I have not checked to see if I still have metal in the water, but to be safe, I put this in the pool weekly this year and plan to put it in before closing in a larger does. Will this impact the effectiveness of the Ployquat60?

In the past, I also put in a floater with a non-chlorine oxidizer. One having a floater or two is helpful in case it freezes, but also, I thought it would help with organics that get into the pool. I have a mesh cover, so things get into the pool. I can't say if it will still be 60 when we open the pool. We are in Northern Virginia and sometimes have warmer winters.

Can’t speak to the sequestrant thing but TFP does not recommend the MPS in the pool. It’s not needed and can cause problems with testing. Would be better off with a trichlor floater if needed.

When you say you shocked it, was that a one time chlorine overdose or did you perform a SLAM process?

You are doing several things that TFP does not suggest but that is entirely up to you. If what you are doing is working for you, you may not want to change it.
If you want to become more familiar with what we teach, I suggest Pool Care Basics Archives up in pool school to review the closing techniques we use.

You might check with Jack’s Magic, but I thought I read somewhere here that type of sequestrant is incompatible with poly 60 (will cloud the water).

EDIT; Found this

“It is also important to note that you should not mix the commonly used, "Jack's Magic Magenta Stuff" pool cleaner formula and Polyquat in a pool. According to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Jack's Magenta Stuff is an acrylic acid copolymer. That means that it is a negatively charged polymer designed to attract and then bind to positively charged metal ions. On the other hand, Polyquat is a positively charged polymer. When you mix these two, you may form a cloudy mess in your pool water. Due to this, Trouble Free Pool recommends that you should never, mix these two.[16]”
