added some polyquat cause we get warm and cold weather mixed a lot...

Was pretty easy really... Took about 25 mins to put the cover on... (with help of my father in law)

Drained it below the return lines about 2 feet total with the main drains so i could blow those out with a shop vac... put the plugs in the return pipes. blew some air into the main drains... but yea... can't really figure out how those stay dry, but they are all 4 or 5 feet below ground. shop vacced the water out of the skimmers after blowing out water with the shop vac, till there was none in the bottom of them, and put in the gizmos.

took the plug out of the sand filter... added antifreeze to the pump, and turned off the power.

probably took 45 mins total after the water was down...

Good times! Saved 350 to 400 bucks... depending what they used to decide to add from the pool store.

Thanks TFP!!! Till next year.

Can you explain a little more in detail? Were you successful in removing the water through the main drain piping and closing the valve to create an "air lock"? The water should be bubbling for at least 45 seconds to 1 minute? Thanks!

Edited....

No air lock as far as i Know... I can probably go back and try again, but have heard ball valves may not hold totally anyways... and i have no real way of using anything else to keep it as the pipes are locked in place for good...

Being I am sure I got the water out of the first part above ground... anything under it won't freeze anyways as far as i am concerned.

So, no, no air lock... just water under freezing level... Seems how the pool company did it anyways...

I am just 100% sure the skimmers are dry and the pump has antifreeze.

Like i said, i hope it worked :)

I have had success with stuck things like that by pouring scalding hot water over it real slowly. What it does is expand a little and Pop loose. Maybe even wrap it with a rag first to help hold the hot water. A well place tap with something can't hurt either.

Can you take a picture of the pump housing and equipment pad from different angles? If you are successful with the MD bubbling for a while, then closing the valve will keep the water level below the frost line. Here on the east coast, we really do not get severe cold spells that I believe will do any damage to the main drain as you are down deep. Depending on your plumbing, you could possibly add an extra black plug and shut off the skimmer valve as well. My pool is plumbed where I rotate the skimmers closed towards the main drain, then close the main drain and add a plug in the pump basket suction side (If this makes sense). More insurance in my opinion.

ok. so I can't get this separated from my pool cleaner... The part that is the quick disconnect is STUCK STUCK STUCK. i have lubed it 2 times during the year... with the right lube... and it kept getting a little harder and harder after it was in the water for a bit... and now no matter what I can't get it to come loose... put a couple holes in my hands trying..

Anyone got any Ideas?

Order a Hayward direction nozzle seat removal tool (1419???) and insert it backwards - the fatter side grabs Polaris wall fittings, and thread that baby out...
