Clorinator Chemical Question

With it being hard to get the tablets that I use in my chlorinator (Poolife MPT Extra) I was looking to switch to Clorox Extra Blue. Then I heard an awful story at a local club where there was an explosion due to changing what they used. I don’t know the specifics of the exact change they made, but now I’m nervous to put anything in my chlorinator other than the exact product used before. Both products are Trichlor but the active ingredient percents are slightly different. Does anyone have any insight in this?

Avoid any of that “blue“ stuff. Usually has copper in it - can cause green hair and staining.

Now is a good time to consider a salt water chlorine generator!

Mixing Trichlor and Calcium Hypochlorite is very dangerous, especially in a chlorinator where the heat and gasses are trapped (until they aren't). That may have been what you were hearing about.

You can refer to this article on Chemical Storage and Safety

I too have a bunch of Trichlor tablets (99%) as well as Trichlor tablets with copper (91% and 1% respectively) -- foolishly procured before I discovered this site and its recommendations -- which are safe to use together in the chlorinator, although I've since learned that both spell long term trouble for your CYA level, and the copper is entirely unnecessary on top of leading to staining and green hair, not to mention ridding yourself of both of them involves draining your pool, so you're better off going with liquid chlorine (a.k.a. bleach) (a.k.a. sodium hypochlorite) anyway.

More on that here: How to Chlorinate Your Pool

Happy swimming!
