Clearing pool algae by shock and not cartridge filter?

I have a decent amount of algae. This year thinking of saving needing to clean my cartridge filters and letting the shock/slam process remove the algae. Does that work, or do you need the cartridge filter to remove the algae?

You still need the carts. While the chlorine kills the agea, the residual dead algae still needs to be removed.
