Chlorine tab feeder o-ing gaske

When it comes to chlorine tab feeders there is viton o-ring inside the lid.

Why should there be an o-ring at all?

To keep it from leaking. It is under pressure. Also you do not want chlorine fumes coming out the top when pump is off.

Why is the chlorine feeder designed with that gap at all?

They are erosion feeders. The entire stack is under pressure as stated above.

There has to be a gap so you can load it.

@Darin i know the lid can be opened and closed to put a tab in but why there should be gap in the lid at all.

Why the gap is not deleted in the design so that we only open and close the lid to put the tab inside?

Maybe different manufacturers have different size pucks? i have not dug mine out to look at in years so i cant be sure.

It is a straight thread on the cap to make it easy to rotate. Thus it needs an oring to seal the top.
If it were a tapered thread then it may not need an oring but as you may know the more you screw and unscrew a tapered thread the more difficult to have it reliably seal. That was why pipe tape is used over time - to help worn tapered threads to seal.

Remember your mom from years ago? Same principle: because they (mfg) said so. And do your self a favor, use some O-ring lube not just on the o-ring but on the threads as well. And if it's the Hayward feeder, get the lid wrench as well.
