Chlorine puck damaged the liner

Hi all

so we had a bunch of people over last night, including kids who jumped into our Intex pool. As it got dark I left it until this morning to check the pool and found a chlorine tablet sitting at the bottom of the pool!! One of the kids thought it would be fun to take it out of the floater!

The tablet was sitting there for 12 hours and an area the size of a basketball is discoloured. But that’s not what worries me. I am worried that the liner is shot now. Do I need to drain the pool?

Right now there are no signs of damage other than it being discoloured but I worry that over time this may happen. If it was to start leaking would this be a gradual leak or a sudden leak? We were going to leave the pool up for another 2 months of our summer but I am scared now that the liner is weak and won’t handle it! Has anyone had this situation and been fine for the season?

Let's separate "unattractive" from "damage."

Yes, you have permanently made your liner "unattractive."

"Damage," really hard to tell. We know nothing about the manufacturer, the thickness, the quality etc. To much variation to give a generic answer. The pool might continue to hold water for a number of years, but it is likely weakened.

I would not drain the pool. I would go down and see if it "feels" different. If you think it feels different than the surrounding area, I would patch it. You patch a little bigger than the spot, then a 2nd patch larger than the first patch. It's actually probably less eye catching to just patch it either way.

Thanks for the advice. The pool is Intex Ultra frame XTR. The liner itself doesn’t feel different in the discoloured spot. But we can feel a divot underneath as if there’s not enough sand on that area. However we can feel those in other spots around the pool too so not sure if the divot is related to the chlorine tab or the tab just landed in that spot.

In terms of patching it up, can you patch an area that large? At the moment I am not too worried about years to come but would like to see the liner make it through the summer.

Divot is not from the puck...it likely settled there because it did, or it was a low spot. 'Twer it I, I'd just enjoy the pool...the probability is high that it will last the season.

Thanks for the reassurance. My worst nightmare is that the liner gives way suddenly and the pool floods my backyard along with the neighbours!

This is doubtful- i did a similar thing to my brand new 16’ liner and it outlived the frame. I had to drain to relevel (for the 3rd time) and left the floater in
It sat there all night bleaching my new pool .
The only leak in the liner was from a weed eater incident and it patched up fine. Those liners are quite robust.
