first, thank you for your patience! New to pools, so I need a little help please. 18,000 gunite pool, DE Filter. Please tell me the best order to add chemicals and the time between applications.

So far, the Pool is clean of debris and leaves. It has a little green on the edges. I added 16 ozs of acid.

Next steps:
  • Chlorine shock:
How much - 3 lbs?

When can I add the next item?

Stabilizer Liquid: How much?

Anything else?

Is this a new pool or new to you pool?

You will want to manage your pH and Chlorine (FC) daily, the rest you can work on weekly or monthly.

Have you read this yet? ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry

We highly recommend using only liquid chlorine (bleach). All the solid forms of chlorine add something else to your water you may or may not need.

Liquid stabilizer can be added slowly in front of a return jet. Use the pool math link at the top of the page to figure out how much.

Hi and welcome to TFP! The first order of business is a test kit! There is a link in my signature. While you wait on that I would add a half gallon of bleach to the pool with the pump running every day. Then start reading:

Basic Pool Care Schedule

ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry

Recommended Pool Chemicals

Also, if you could fill out your signature with your pool info that would be helpful as well. Let us know when your test kit comes and we will be glad to help :)

Hello david and welcome to TFP. I recommend you spend a bit of time in Pool School (at top of page). You appear to have the cart before the horse. This is not uncommon BTW - we all were there at one point.

What measurement technique are you using and how are you determining how much and of what to add? Pool stores are notorious for invalid measurement techniques for a variety of reasons.

In general, in order to be the best level of help we need accurate measurements from an acceptable test kit - TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C (TFTestkits.net). These kits have all of the reagants and tests needed to provide the following info:

FC
CC
pH
TA
CH
CYA

If you have any green you have algae and need to SLAM. This is a well documented and proven process and is not just throwing shock in and hoping for continued success. Info for SLAM can be found in Pool School. CYA level is critical to executing this process.

As for adding chemicals and in what order: We would need to know the measurements above to be able to direct you on this. ONE NOTE: MA & Chlorine SHOULD NOT BE ADDED at the same time. Leave at least 15-20 minutes between them with pump running and mixing water.

Dry Acid is more expensive and can cause issues over liquid MA.
Liquid stabilizer is more expensive than granular stabilizer. Granular should be inserted into a sock and hung over the pool return away from plaster. It is very acidic and can damage plaster if left in direct contact.

If you want to learn the TFP way (cheaper and easier) get your test kit on order and get us some measurements. We can help guide you to a Trouble Free Pool.
