Hi,

I think I understand how the check valve is supposed to work and why, but wanted to verify my thinking here first before engaging into that change on my pool. I currently don't have a check valve anywhere and I'd like to add one so that my pump won't run dry every time I clean my filter. I can think of two places to insert a check valve. Either before the pool pump (This would allow me to clean my pool pump basket & filter without leaving the pump dry). Alternatively, I could place the valve between the filter and the pump (This would allow the filter to be cleaned, but it seems like it would leave the pump dry when I clean out its basket). Logically, it sounds like the first option is a better choice, but I've read in enough places the suggestion to insert it between the two that I'd like to ask the more knowledgeable people here about the right approach. I don't have a lot of room between the pump and the inlet unfortunately making that installation
somewhat problematic.

As a side note, I was thinking of adding a diverter valve between the pump & pool so I can push my dirty water out & bypass the filter. I don't assume that they sell combo check valves/diverters?

I recently installed a check valve between the pump and filter. This prevents DE from draining back to the pump when servicing the filter or pump. The pump still runs drains when I open the pump lid, but it pries quickly on restart. Not sure what the right answer is for you, but posting pics may help.
