I tested my CH after nearly nine inches of rain recently and it was 220. PoolMath recommends 260, and said to add 207 oz by weight or 160 oz. by volume of calcium chloride. I had a 8 lb. bag of Pool Mate brand Calcium Increaser (active ingredient calcium chloride compound) According to the bag instructions, I would need 10.8 pounds for 30,000 gallon, which is less than the approx. 13 pounds (207/16 = 12.93 pounds) recommended by pool math, so I added all 8 pounds. Note: I estimate my pool capacity to be 35,000 gallons)

Tested my water this morning and CH was 280.

Why did I overshoot my CH?

PoolMath does not really recommend targets, it is up to you to choose your target.

Likely your pool volume is a bit off and there is done margin for the test itself. No need to stress over 20ppm of CH. When I test I use 10ml of water so each drop is 25ppm ;)

I agree that 200 ppm is not a big deal. In other words, the result is fine, but I got there with luck, not procedure and accuracy. That's what bugs me. I used 40% less chemical than suggested.

I'm sure my volume estimation is off, since I have an irregular shaped pool (40x20) with a shallow and deep end. However, according to PoolMath, the only way CH goes from 220 to 280 using 8 pounds of CaCL2 is for my pool volume to be 15000 gallons. Again, something isn't right, despite a useable result. Some call this anal, I prefer the term thorough.

I see that PoolMath doesn't suggest a target other than the "GOALS" range for each section. That said, should my target be 0 CSI and go from there?

There is no need to try to Target a specific CSI number or to try to keep tight control over it.

Don't forget that there is variation in the CH test. Your first test could have been slightly low and your second test could be slightly high and that would almost account for the difference of 20 PPM. Do you have a Speedster? Because the endpoint for the CH can be a little tricky without it.
