Cavitation - what to do?

I have a Hayward Super Pump VS700, only a year old. Yesterday after cleaning the pump's filter, I didn't prime it properly to start back up. I restarted it several times after filling the pump basket housing with water, but did not close and seal the cover tight. Pump kept sucking out the housing but not drawing intake water. I ran it several minutes over and over like this. Finally, I read the manual and realized cover has to be tightly closed and sealed so no air sucks and prevents drawing the intake. Got pump running okay finally, but ever since then, it makes a continuous rattling noise. This VS700 model has a diagnostic menu and log, where I saw that "cavitation" occurred yesterday when I was improperly priming. Rattling noise continues constantly. My question is -- have I damaged the pump because of the cavitation and need to service it to replace bearings or seal grease or whatever is causing the rattling?

Thank you!

Welcome to TFP! As noted by your pump's diagnostics, you may have encountered some cavitation during periods of inadequate water flow, but that area is within the wet area of the pump (strainer pot, volute, impeller) and not the motor bearings (dry side). But if it is still rattling, perhaps there are a few things you can check:
- Pool water level high enough; at least 1/2 - 3/4 up the skimmer opening?
- Skimmer weir door (flap) not stuck; operating smoothly?
- Pump strainer pot fully primed at all times?
- Any 3-way valves before or after the pump open to allow unrestricted water movement (suction and pressure sides)?

If you are still having the same issue, I would suggest posting some pics of your equipment pad from different angles so we can see your set-up.
