We bought our house about 3 years ago and have always wanted a pool. I had different companies come out to quote pools and they seemed extremely high. One quote was $80k for a pool with a beach entry and a slide down a hill in our yard, the other was $50k for just a basic in ground pool and hot tub.

I was thinking a basic pool would be $25k to $30k and the more luxurious pool would be maybe $50k. Do these prices seem high to anyone else?

Pricing is highly regional and can sometimes very even city by city. But California is a very expensive market to build anything in, including pools. $50k for a very basic in-ground pool would not surprise me at all in California.

Very basic 15x30 inground pool with 1ft of decking around all sides and good quality equipment was 60k here in Texas. If you add a spa, add 7-10k. We were pretty surprised too!!

Pools are never cheaper than people expect. Folks with a good sense of value get close and most far underestimate the cost. Doesn't seem odd at all given your location.

And when your weather is sunny and 75 every day, that doesn't help the regional pricing of anything.

Yep. It never really gets that “hot” in San Diego in my opinion so a pool there is going to need (or would highly benefit from) a heat source. Either a gas heater, electric heat pump, or solar heaters on the roof. All of that adds to the cost of the build (figure an additional $4-$5k) plus added future utility expenses.

First off, Let me just say that I am a fan of the people. I root for people frequently, will do so here again and I hope you get an awesome pool at an awesome price.

that all being said, most of the country lost a few months worth of business, so there was a supply squeeze. (to various degrees, but still). To top that off, demand is now arguably higher than its ever been. I am frankly quite shocked if anyone can get a price even remotely close to last years pricing, for any level of pool, if they can get one in the first place

Now, With all of THAT being said, I am officially back to rooting for you guys. Go JD !!!!!

Same! We are in Iowa here. I was expecting 50k. Pricing for vinyl is about $70-90k. That doesn't include a fence. I'm guessing $100-115k all in with decking/landscaping.

Sounds about right for a gunite/pebble pool in So Cal. Our rock waterfall/slide added about $17K to the price. Before you commit, post the quotes to make sure you get the right equipment. Lots of good info here at TFP.

Our pool was built in 2008 in Oklahoma. It's pretty basic (no water features) and not very big but it still cost 50K to put in. The original plan was to have a hot tub as well, but it was deleted from the work order. With the spa, it would have been almost 70K.

Pricing sounds correct for SD. Wouldn't be surprised if the $50,000 creeped up when you realized what the price actually includes. To give you some insight, I built my own pool. Skipped the pool builder and sub-contracted most of the build. I have some expensive touches and did not do a hot tub (Have an above ground). Add about $12,000 for an in-ground hot tub to your pool build. Not paying a pool company a penny and I still spent close to $40K.

Don't forget many pool quotes do not include the price of hooking up electric (add on another ~$2k). It cost us ~$47k for our free form. Electric was outside the scope of the build.

Good thing to ask. I think SD builders include electric up to 50'. Ask about decking. I spoke to many builders and the price was pool only. No decking included.

Or like we found out..... when your 35 year old 100Amp house service couldn’t handle it.... you can pay for that to be upgraded too. We didn’t add that $2k to the pool column because technically it was a house thing that needed doing anyway........ but $2k more was still $2k more.

These prices are way below the two 15x30 quotes I go in Denver. Also, the quotes here seem to vary significantly. Very frustrating for sure

Mines is being tiled right now.
85 perimeter pool with Jandy equipment and 300 sq feet of decking was $38,650
We added a Spa, and we jumped up to $49,700
Final bill after upgrades/finishes 68 grand.

quartz, firebowls on columns, 4 ton water fall, 3 deck jets, spa spill way, 2 led bubblers, Polaris robot, 3" plumbing, 4" drains to the street, fire pit, extra gas line, extra GCFI outlet, 520 sq ft of decking in pea gravel, split face stone, 2 umbrella anchors, volleyball sockets, tanning ledge. VS pump with controller (not full automation).
