I need to replace my multiport valve (union nuts cracked). I just drained my filter a few weeks back to fix the filter vent valve and pump seal.

Is there any way to disconnect multiport without DE spilling everywhere, requiring a backwash and refill of 7 lbs of DE?

Not really. The filter is going to drain the minute you release the multiport. With my Pentair filter, I would put it into backwash position and then open the air release at the top. That will cause the filter to drain down to the lowest connector and then I could remove the couplings with a small amount of water and DE leftover in the bottom of the tank. I’d still lose some DE in the drain out process but most of the DE would be in the bottom of the tank.
