I think y’all are just mixing plumbing and engineering terms for “section”.

It’s commonly used in plumbing to remove a “section” of pipe meaning that a distinct piece is cut and removed and then sometimes a new piece replaces it.

In the custom car/engineering world a cut can be made in an object (like hood, fender, a tube, etc) and then rejoined by closing up the adjacent sides and gluing, welding, them together again to form a similar but slightly different shape.

Thanks for clarifying, I agree, it seems like a terminology difference.
