I have a Hayward propane water heater for my inground pool. I have the piping set up to bye pass the heater when not being used, which is 95% of the time. After using the heater, I usually drain the water from the heater, and sometimes I flush it out with the garden hose. Should I continue to drain out the water from the heater when not being used, or is this just an extra step that i do not have to do ?? Thanks, Mike

IMO, you don't need to flush it at all ever. It was designed to have water in it all the time. Bypassing 100% will result in stagnant water in it as well. If you do use the bypass, allow some water to pass through the heater.
Thanks PoolGate for the reply. I have not had much luck with pool heaters lasting very long, so my thought was to get the water out of the heater when I can. I know it is probably my fault for not keeping after the pool water as I should.

Why did they fail though was it heat exchanger failure? The only thing poor water quality will result in (and a bypass help) is degradation of the heat exchanger (corrosion).
Yes, the heat exchanger started leaking. The first one lasted about 8 years. The second one lasted about four years. That is why I put a bye pass in.
