Bug Mystery

I have solved this mystery, but intended to post it a while back for detective fun. Can anyone guess where the ants are coming from?

We had a very strange situation where hundreds of ants (winged and unwinged) were showing up in the skimmer. I discovered that they would first appear in the corners of our pool. A few times, I scooped them out or while in the pool guided them into the skimmer only to return to the same corner to find a dozen or so more appear. There were so many ants floating that we didn't want to get in. Fortunately we found the source and solved it within a few hours.

What's your guess?

Anyway, they were burrowing under the concrete decking and coming in through the corners of the pool... coming through the liner track.

Yikes! I don't have a liner, but today I have hundreds of the winged creatures and one cicada. I've skimmed twice and sprinkled them with powder pesticide when I dump them on the ground.

I had some fire ants do the same thing, but i never saw very many of them in the pool.

I left my robot i,n the pool last night, and this morning, I had 3 cicadas clinging to the power cable, barely alive.
