I had not thought about catching rain water to top off. We may do this. I thought the water softener wouldn't really rid you of the iron problem. Maybe every little bit helps though?

I was planning and this is all hypothetical because my liner isn't even in yet but to use a submersible pump and have that hooked up to a polyfill bucket system. I will have a sand filter and don't want to backflush for iron just to refill with iron water.

Be sure to update your signature with all of your pool and equipment info. Include you are on a well too. It will help as folks answer your posts. But yes, definitely pre-filter and use polyfill as much as you can if you have to fill from a well. I linked the other member's thread above so you can reference that as well.
