Had the sand replaced 2 years ago and nothing on the inside seemed damaged. However, I am getting a small amount of sand under both returns and only occurs when i turn the pump back on. Worried that I will eventually lose all the sand in filter. Anything I can do before emptying the sand again and checking the laterals and standpipe? thanks

Emptying to inspect may be your best course of action for now. It's possible one of the laterals got damaged during the winter freeze & thaw period.
